Abundance of Avocados

The morning after a recent storm, I went outside and gathered about two dozen avocados off the ground. The storm was milder than expected, but the wind still knocked some banana plants over and dropped avocados early. I wondered whether the avocados would ripen.

Day by day, I ate an avocado. Day by day, the tree dropped another one or two. I added those to the collection sitting on an outside table.

Then one morning, all of the avocados became ripe at the same time.

This happened on a morning I was hurrying to catch a bus. I knew the avocados would not be good if I left them sitting in the sun all day. So I found a large box, put about twenty ripe avocados inside, grabbed my bags and the box, and walked out to meet the bus.

When the bus pulled up and the driver opened the door, I told her I had a box of ripe avocados and asked if she could pass them on to other people. I was going to be working quietly by myself in a library. She was going to be interacting with people all day. She had a much better chance of getting those avocados to people who would enjoy them. I left the box on the bus.

I do not know what happened to the avocados. I never asked her when I saw her again. I am guessing some of them, and maybe all of them, were eaten.

This is how life works in a town where nature provides food because people planted trees. When you suddenly have an abundance, you share it. You find people who are happy to receive what you have to give.

I am still eating an avocado most days from the tree that provides for me. When the tree gives an abundance again, I will pass on that abundance.

You are welcome to eat from nature’s abundance.
