Focusing Your Thoughts and Actions on Your Goal

    Visualize what you want.

Brainstorm: What are your needs and wants? What is important to you? What are you passionate about? What interests you? What do you desire for your future? What do you want to experience? What makes you happy? What brings you joy?

Example: “I want a strong and healthy body so I can do everything I want to do in the future.”

    Decide your goal.

Decide what you want to achieve. Be clear and concise with your goal. Make sure your goal is achievable. Verify your goal is aligned with your core values. Identify resources you require to achieve your goal. Have a way to track your progress. Set a deadline for achieving your goal. Schedule time to work on your goal.

Example: I will require a flat ground surface to lay my mat on, the “Yoga Body & Mind Handbook”, flexible clothing, a calendar, and lined paper for writing down the weeks and poses.

    Write down your goal.

Make your goal visual. Write your goal using “I” statements in present tense. Write your goal focusing on what you want to do, not what you are stopping.

Example: “I am knowledgeable in yoga breathing and poses, and I teach classes.”

    Know your goal's steps.

    1) Write down the actions required to achieve your goal. Possibly do research to learn how other people already achieved the same goal. 2) Write down the daily actions you will do to achieve your goal. Include specific times and places.

Example: Every Sunday for 52 weeks, I learn a new yoga pose. Everyday for 52 weeks, I practice all the learned yoga poses for 1 minute each. I start practicing in the kitchen area at 5:30 in the morning.

    Begin now.

Implement the steps to achieving your goal. Do the day to day actions. Read your Goal Statement(s) every morning and evening. Be consistent. Monitor your progress. Reward yourself everyday.

Example: I write “WOW!!! “ everyday on the calendar that I keep my commitment and do the yoga poses.

  • Stacy Richards smiles and holds up a light blue jar of water while standing. She wears a flannel, and a pink plumeria is behind her right ear.

    Persevere.

Make achieving your goal more fun and easy. Plan ahead. Know what you are going to do the day beforehand. Have your things and environment ready. Eliminate distractions. Set yourself up for success.

Example: Before I go to sleep, everything I require to do the yoga poses is ready and near me. My phone alarm is set for 5 a.m. so I know when its time to get up and start my morning routine.
