Something New I Tried: Bamboo Shoots

Last week at the market, I was offered to try home-cooked bamboo shoots. At first, I said no because I didn’t know about eating bamboo shoots. I didn’t realize it was a food that I had probably already eaten at a Chinese restaurant. The woman farmer encouraged me to taste it, I did, and I liked it.

The farmer was selling cooked bamboo shoots that she had boiled in water, and raw bamboo shoots that were about 3 feet long. The raw shoots were wrapped in their natural tough outer layers that protected the white meat inside. They looked like wide spears.

The first taste of the bamboo shoot I had at the market left a little aftertaste. It reminded me of mild garlic. In my salad, I was not aware of their flavor.

I liked the bamboo shoots enough that I purchased a bag of them. Today I ate half the bag of shoots with some greens, green beans, blue cheese, and hard boiled eggs. They were firm yet soft enough for my Thai spoon to slice through them.

Cooked bamboo shoots can provide some protein, fiber, carbohydrates, and minerals. Bamboo shoots are NOT to be eaten raw.

Trying something new keeps me open and expanding my adventure with food. Saying yes to offers of food leads to new experiences.

You are welcome to say yes to new foods.
