How I Shop Now

Friday is my scheduled shopping day for food, and this happens at the local farmers’ market. My time is spent purchasing nourishing food, talking with a variety of people, and being aware of my gratitude. This easy and fun routine was not always how I shopped for food.

I used to shop to have a lot of food and specific food. And if a specific food was not in stock (available), sometimes I would cry and have a melt down. Why? In my mind, the experience of eating food was something I looked forward to and relied on. So, when a food I was really relying on to be in stock was not there, my mental and emotional state could really be disrupted. I had to figure out how to shop differently.

How did my shopping evolve? My shopping evolved as I evolved. As I nourished my body with food, I was able to let go of limiting beliefs and negative stories. I was able to be open to purchasing a wider variety of food, even if that meant learning how to cook new food. I let go of the control. I started trusting that I had enough and that there would always be enough to take care of myself.

The farmers market begins at 2:30 pm, but I arrive almost 2 hours later. I prioritize working online until 4:00. Arriving later allows me to practice trusting intentionally that nourishing food will still be available. I don’t feel the need to be first in line, to have access to all the items, or to know what everyone is selling before I make my first purchase. I make an effort to buy something from everyone who is selling real food. I stay away from food with extra added sugar like ice cream, cookies, pies, and chocolate. And I trust the temporary support I receive through EBT.

There are two small stores in the town I also shop at. When the farmers market has no eggs, I can get them at the store. The stores carry items like Hawaiian made tortillas and Hawaiian grown onions, sugar-free natural yogurt, peanut butter, and some other vegetables that are nice to have. I like supporting the local economy.

How I shopped changed because I changed. Since I keep learning, I keep changing and so will my shopping.

Welcome to how I shop now.
