Protein
As a child, I had a lot of energy according to my mother. My body wanted to move rather than sit still. A doctor told my mother, “the more protein you give her, the better.”
My life experience has proven to me that protein 1) feeds the mind and helps me focus, 2) repairs the body, 3) keeps me satisfied between meals, and 4) helps build and maintain bone.
I get my protein from a variety of animal and plant sources: I eat meat from fish, cows, chicken, deer, pig, and goat. I eat dairy products like yogurt and cheese. I eat eggs. I eat a variety of beans, lentils, and nuts.
I feel the change in my head when I eat protein. Before protein, there is a physical pressure in the brain and my mind is easily distracted. I used to force myself to “push through.” I didn’t know my mind and brain were asking for food. Now I listen and stop and eat because protein helps me think clearly and do meaningful work. After protein, my mind is more focused, aware, and calm.
I pack my meals with protein. I add nuts when cooking oatmeal, and then add a nut butter, smoothie, or yogurt when eating. For pasta, I often add a large quantity of meat and cheese. On a salad, I might add cheese, nuts, and another protein like meat, egg, beans, or lentils. Different proteins in one meal give the body a wider range of nutrients.
I now understand the words spoken to my mother when I was a little girl. Eating protein helps me be a better human. All human bodies use and require protein, whether plant or animal based.
You are welcome to eat meals with protein.
