Week 7: Mountain Pose & Standing Forward Bend

Recently after a work trip, I have been challenged with getting back to my early morning yoga practice. So, I’m grateful for practicing these two yoga poses with you. Even though the poses may seem simple, there is wonderful body and breath awareness when practicing Mountain pose and Standing Forward Bend.

I love how these poses have a foundation of bringing awareness to the four points of the feet: the padded area below the big and little toes, and the left and right areas of the heels. Focusing on these four points makes me more aware of my balance and how I am standing.

In addition, when I am at the beach, in an airport, really anywhere, I can practice these poses. For Standing Forward Bend, if I am in a populated area, I just find a place to have my back facing (like a wall), reach my hands high above my head, and then fold over. It’s a great stretch, especially when surrounded by people. And anytime I can slip off my slippers (flip flops), I love to plant my feet on the earth, breathe in and reach high above my head, and come into Mountain pose. It is a fantastic way to focus my mind and energy.

If Mountain pose and Standing Forward Bend are not part of your regular life, I encourage you to learn and practice them.
