Ginger Banana Snack

A girlfriend of mine dehydrates bananas and ginger together and creates a delicious and nutritious snack. My guess is she blends them first, pours the mixture onto something flat, and then dehydrates it.

This snack used to be more chewy and flexible. It was rolled up like a fruit roll up. Now she sells the snack as large ginger banana crackers that are thin and breakable.

However my girl friend makes this snack, I enjoy the spice of the ginger and the tingle in my mouth. And I like to eat this snack after a meal or in the evenings.

What dehydrating does

Dehydrating removes water from food.

Bacteria and mold need water to grow. By taking the water out of the bananas and ginger, the crackers can be kept for a long time without being refrigerated.

Removing the water also concentrates the sugar, fiber, and minerals from the ginger and bananas. The sugar, fiber, and minerals end up as a smaller piece of food. This is why dried fruit tastes more intense than fresh fruit.

What is in this snack

Bananas give your body carbohydrate, fiber, potassium, vitamin B6, and magnesium. Dehydrating concentrates all of those into a smaller piece.

Ginger is a root and is used as a spice. Ginger is also eaten in larger amounts in meals and in drinks. My friend uses enough ginger in these crackers that I do not taste the banana at all.

Ginger provides your body compounds. (A compound is a substance made of two or more elements joined together. Water is a compound, made of hydrogen and oxygen.) The main compound in ginger is called gingerol, and gingerol is what makes ginger taste hot and spicy.

Ginger has been used for a very long time in many places for nausea, to help an upset stomach. It’s a great snack for any tourist visiting the farmers markets on Friday if they have an upset stomach from the drive to get to the town.

This is a two ingredient snack that can benefit the body and be satisfying to the taste buds.

You are welcome to eat snacks made from real food.
