Turmeric Tonic

Friends of mine created their own version of a turmeric tonic. It is delicious and nutrient dense.

They sell the tonic at the local farmers market and at a farmers market on another part of the island.

Almost every ingredient in their turmeric tonic is grown and harvested on their farm. The ingredients are turmeric, ginger, lemon, lime, coconut water, coconut milk, honey, Hawaiian salt, and pepper.

Why the pepper and coconut milk are in the tonic

Turmeric is a root. The compound in turmeric that people are interested in is called curcumin. Curcumin has been studied for its benefits for reducing inflammation.

Your body absorbs very little curcumin on its own, but black pepper and coconut milk help your body receive benefits from the turmeric root.

Pepper contains a compound called piperine. Piperine slows down how quickly your body breaks curcumin apart. This means more of the curcumin stays available for your body to use when piperine is present.

Curcumin dissolves in fat rather than in water. This means your body absorbs curcumin when fat is present, and coconut milk provides that fat.

I do not know why my friends chose to add the other ingredients, but I know they have their reasoning. I also know that coconut water is hydrating, lemon and lime add acid, ginger adds spice, and honey sweetens.

I find drinking their tonic refreshing, and I like that I know the people that make it.

You are welcome to drink turmeric tonic.
