Tiny Rocks

I made a green bean salad this morning. The salad consisted of chopped green beans, almonds, blue cheese, two avocados, rice, and a scoop of pesto.

Walking through town with my canvas bag of food, I decided to stop and eat rather than wait until I got to the ocean. I found a shady spot on grass under a big tree, laid out my sarong, mixed the food together in my container, and ate. I smiled and waved at people passing by. When about two thirds of the food was eaten, I put the lid back on my container and walked to the ocean.

For the first few hours at the ocean, I wrote and listened to an audiobook. Then I opened the container to take a picture of what was left.

I leaned over for my Thailand spoon. When I looked back at the food, I thought, “I don’t remember putting ground pepper on my salad.”

My knee was covered with tiny rocks and so was my food.

I like the sand and the rocks to stay at the beach. If every person takes some home, that is part of a beach disappearing. So I scooped the rocks out little by little, losing food with each scoop. I would rather lose some food than take the rocks.

I did not remove all the tiny rocks. I could feel the ones I missed when I finished the meal at home.

Sometimes life gives you tiny rocks. You get to choose what to do with them. I laughed, and I left them at the beach where they belong, along with some of my lunch.

You are welcome to eat food with a little nature in it.
