When Nature Provides: Grapefruit

When nature provides abundance, be aware and grateful.

Last week at the market, a farmer was selling grapefruits. She had a whole box of them. Two grapefruits were one dollar, so I bought eight because I have access to an electric citrus juicer.

I very much enjoy the taste of fresh squeezed fruits: the natural sweetness, the pulp, and the nourishment. I appreciate that the leftover parts can be composted and returned to the land.

When making fresh squeezed citrus juice, or grapefruit juice, I wash the whole fruit first because I don’t want any of the outer dirt or stuff to be mixed with my juice. It can change the taste. Then I slice the fruits in half and begin juicing.

The juicing is a song and dance for me. The sound of the electric citrus juicer begins when my hand presses down on the skin of the grapefruit. The meat of the grapefruit pushes against the part that spins fast and massages the grapefruit meat, releasing the juice. The juice flows through the pulp and makes its way down to the waiting cup.

When I finish with 1/2, that goes in the sink and I pick up another half and begin the same process again. The sound is the song and my movement is the dance.

I am enjoying the electric citrus juice I get to use. I’m making less mess (I can be messy in the kitchen) and the machine makes the process quicker.

What grapefruit gives:

• Vitamin C — to support immunity and repair tissue

• Potassium — to support the heart and muscles

• Fiber — to support digestion (more when eating the segments than juicing)

• Water — to hydrate

• Plant compounds — pink and red varieties carry carotenoids including lycopene

Eight grapefruits got to come home with me because I could process them to make fresh squeezed juice. If I did not have use of the electric citrus juicer, I would’ve come home with two grapefruits. My circumstance allowed me to receive the abundance.

When I see nature’s food in abundance, and I can enjoy and consume, I openly and gratefully receive.

You are welcome to join me in making fresh squeezed juice.

Grapefruit does not mix well with some prescribed medicines. If you take prescribed medicines, your pharmacist can tell you whether yours is one of them.
